Why is it better to buy local seafood rather than imported seafood?

  • Local seafood comes from clean waters you can trust
  • You are supporting sustainable fishing, by supporting an industry where catches are logged and trips are monitored to ensure the fishing grounds will be there for the generations to come
  • You are supporting more than 100 fishing families who land about 100 tonnes of fish a week in Darwin. This supports the local economy
  • You minimise your carbon footprint by eating local produce that hasn’t been transported from interstate or overseas
  • You are rewarding your discerning taste buds because the quality of locally caught, fresh seafood is oceans apart from cheap, imported substitutes

Food labelling

To help you out, the Northern Territory Government was the first in Australia to introduce food labelling laws. Since November 2008, anybody selling seafood in the Northern Territory, whether it’s a restaurant or fish and chip shop, has to give you an honest account of what the fish is and where it came from.

This has given consumers a choice and many seafood suppliers a bit of a wake up call as visitors express surprise that a city promoted for its iconic, fresh local seafood could even consider putting cheap substitutes on the menu.

Now it’s easy. If you want to eat fresh, healthy Territory Seafood, just check the label or ask if it’s local and Support NT Caught!
